After the defeat
againt the Prussians and the revolt of the "Commune de
Paris" , the preserving catholics wanted to " repurchase
the sins of France", and for the delivery of the pope Pie
IX, " by building a basilica. The funds were joined together
near by a national subscription of ten million catholics. The
basilic is an astonishing mixture by Byzantine, Romand and saintongeois
style. The construction lasted of 1875 to 1920! The presence
of careers under the basilica required to put it on formed piles
of eighty three pillars! The basilica is in the shape of Greek
cross, decorated of four cupolas; its central dome is 87 yards
(80 metres) high. The bell-tower shelters a bell of 19 tons
“the Savoyard one” Inside the basilica, the ceiling of the apse
is decorated with the largest mosaic of the world, covering
a surface of 570 yards² (475 m ² ). The basilica is built out
of stone of Chateau-Landon
(one hour from Paris) which secretes, under the effect of the
rain, a white substance. The more it rains and the whiter the
Sacred Heart is!
The basilica dominates Paris of its whiteness and is one of
the emblematic monuments of Paris, with Notre-DAme,
la Tour Eiffel
and Le Louvre. As the basilic
is white, it changes its colours according to the hour and to
the sesons. Great for painters!
