Arc de Triomphe, Champs Elysées
| In Paris, the meeting point of
twelve straight avenues, including the Champs-Élysées, make the
"Place
de l'Etoile" ("Star Square") That place was renamed
Place Charles de Gaulle in 1970 in honor of President
de Gaulle, but is still largely referred to by its
original name "place de l'Etoile". At its centre stands
the "Arc
de Triomphe"(Triumphal arch). |
Arc de Triomphe
| Built since 1806 by order of Napoléon 1st,
in the honor of the French Armies, completed thirty years later
under the reign of Louis Philippe in 1836. One decorated the
pedestal ones with the monument of four allegorical high reliefs
carried out by the sculptors Cortot, Rude whose "Marseillaise"is
remained famous. National symbol, the Triumphal arch was the
seat of major events, like the return of ashes of the Emperor
in 1840 or the burial of the unknown soldier of world war 1.
The tomb is under the slab and is marked by a burner from which
burst out a flame. It also saw scrolling German armies of occupation
in 1940. Today, the Arc de Triomphe is one of the privileged
visiting monument for foreigners and provincial. We can access
to its top and have a wonderful view over the Champs-Elysees,
the Concorde, the Tuileries and the Louvre. The Arc de Triophe
is a place to celebrate victories of world war 1 and 2, there
is the procession of the French armies during the national day
in July 14th (between the Arc and the Place de la Concorde).
It is also the new symbol of the Tour de France cyclist, whose
arrival is on the Champs Elysees. |

Champs Elysées
| The name
"Champs Elysée" refers to the greek Elysium
and the Elysium Fields, the place of the blessed in Greek mythology.
The Avenue des Champs-Élysées is
the most prestigious and broadest avenue in Paris. You'll find
there luxury specialty shops, cinemas, cafés, and, for the greedy,
one of the most famous pastry making in Paris : Ladurée.
Champs-Élysées
is one of the most famous and expansive street in the world and
remains the 2nd most expensive strip of real estate in the world
after New York City's Fifth
Avenue. Two great demonstrations
happens on Champs Elysées during summer : the Bastille
Day Military Parade, on july
14th, and the arrival of the cyclist Tour
de France at the end of july.
As you'll see below, Champs Elysées inspired the art painters
through centuries. |
